Program aims

This program aims to provide the postgraduate students with a comprehensive and advanced knowledge of public health for students who intend to pursue careers in public health practice, management and/or research at local, national and/or supranational levels. The program has a special focus on the development of quantitative analytical skills for public health, epidemiology , health services  and scientific research.

Objectives:

1.1 Recent scientific knowledge essential for the mastery of practice of Public Health and Community Medicine according to the international standards.

1.2 To develop skills to design, analyze, interpret and evaluate/criticise epidemiological and biomedical research.

1.3 To apply current research methods in key areas of chronic disease epidemiology, infectious disease epidemiology and environmental exposure.

1.4  To demonstrate skills in health information analysis, report writing and communication.

1.5  To demonstrate a critical understanding and skills in needs assessment, health equity audit, health care evaluation; changing health behavior, health intervention planning; health systems, policy and financing and, health economics.

 1.6  Integration between scientific knowledge in public health and other related branches to detect and develop relations between them.

1.7  Determination of the community health problems and managing it professionally.

1.8  Ethical principles related to the practice in this specialty.

1.9 Utilization of the available resources effectively and efficiently.

1.10 Taking active role in the community and environmental sustainment.

1.11 Upgrading research interest and abilities.

 

2-Intended Learning Outcomes (IlOs) :

2. a. Knowledge and Understanding

On successful completion of the program, the graduate will be able to:

2.a.1 Understand the fundamental principles of epidemiology and public health.

2.a.2 Recognize the practical research techniques, including an understanding of the strengths and limitations of epidemiological methods, biostatistics, ethics of research as well as those of other public health methods for population health improvement

2.a.3 Understand the principles of health care management and communication skills, including problem definition, project design and management, decision processes, teamwork, written and oral reports, scientific publications.

2.a.4 Explain the impact of public health practice on environment and methods of preserving and maintenance of it.

2.a.5 Discuss the community health problems on an epidemiological basis  and working on preventing it 

2.a.6 Describe the community and its demographic characteristics.

2.a.7 Understand the difference between preventive and curative health and emphasize the role of preventive medicine in the community welfare.

2.a.8 Recognize health economics and disease burden.

2.a.9 Classify the community to different vulnerable groups and identification of their health problems and how to manage these problems.

2.a.10 Understand the environmental global changes and its direct and indirect effects on health.

2.a.11 Identify the difference of diseases trends in developing and developed communities.

2.a.12 Discuss the obstacles of achieving high level of health care for the community and how to deal with these obstacles .

 

2. b. Intellectual Skills :

On successful completion of the program, the graduate will be able to:

2.b.1  Collect and verify data from different sources and interpret data to diagnose prevalent health problems in the community, using various epidemiological strategies and use it for titration and conclusion.

2.b.2  Formulate and test hypotheses

2.b.3 Analyze the situation during outbreaks and epidemics.

2.b.4  Conduct and write-up a program of original research.

2.b.5 Evaluate the performance of primary health care units.

2.b.6  Select a program for prevention and control of  emerging health problem.

2.b.7 Estimate the risk of different health problems

2.b.8  Distinguish between nutritional disorders.

2.b.9 Summarize and present the collected data of his research

2.b.10 Interpret the results of his research and make a conclusion.

 

2.c.  Practical and professional Skills:

On successful completion of the program, the graduate will be able to :

2.c.1 Manipulate statistical packages to analyse data.

2.c.2  Write protocol for his research and thesis in a scientific way.

2.c.3 Interpret experimental results and determine their strength and validity.

2.c.4 Appraise critically the results of research of other researchers.

2.c.5 Design an investigation of a putative communicable disease outbreak or chemical or biological incident.

2.c.6  Prepare and evaluate Public Health technical reports.

2.c.7 Design new methods, tools and ways of professional Public Health and Community practice.

 

2.d.  General and transferable skills :-

On successful completion of the program, the graduate will be able to
